So, my PC shut itself off and I smelled something burning seemingly in the vicinity of the CPU. I was thinking of upgrading some things anyway, so I going to go ahead and replace the mobo, cpu, RAM, and power supply. (This was an Athlon X2 6000+).

After shopping around on newegg, and trying to keep my costs around the $450 mark, here's what I came up with:

CORSAIR CMPSU-750TX 750W ATX12V / EPS12V SLI Ready CrossFire Ready 80 PLUS Certified Active PFC Compatible with Core i7 Power Supply
$109.99 after instant savings with another $10.00 mail in rebate

G.SKILL Ripjaws Series 8GB (2 x 4GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1333 (PC3 10666) Desktop Memory Model F3-10666CL7D-8GBRH
$109.99

AMD Phenom II X4 965 Black Edition Deneb 3.4GHz 4 x 512KB L2 Cache 6MB L3 Cache Socket AM3 125W Quad-Core Processor
and
ASUS M4A88T-V EVO/USB3 AM3 AMD 880G HDMI USB 3.0 ATX AMD Motherboard
Combo deal: $249.98 after savings and also has another $10.00 rebate

Put a bit more into the motherboard and psu with future upgrades in mind. Mostly use it for gaming, and some graphics stuff (photoshop, blender, graphics programming...)

Any suggestions on saving more money, or reasons I might not want to go with what I've picked out? Also, I'm curious about cooling. Would it be better to replace the stock cpu heatsink/fan unit?

Thanks!

A 750TX would be overkill.

Seasonic X-series 560W

That would be a very high grade PSU, way more efficient and just a bit more than you are spending.

OR

Seasonic 530W

Slightly better PSU, less money, all the power you need for a single GPU build.

You only need to replace the stock cooler if you are overclocking. I recommend you do that, after proper research on the subject.
