What hardware is not used until login

Hello,
Dell M6500 laptop boots W7 to login screen. Display (and external display) goes dark, computer is unresponsive. From network, C drive is accessible. If I remote desktop into the machine, it runs fine. End the remote session and login local, crash within 2 minutes.

When you remote in does the local monitor get a picture?

If not try remoting in and changing the resolution to 800x600, if this makes the local display show then someone mangaged to set the resolution really high. If it doesn't try changing it in safe model.

does it run fine in Safe Mode? have you made any changes recently? When you remote in, can you check your event viewer for errors?

This sounds like a video driver problem. I would suggest removing and reinstalling the video drivers.

This is a driver problem. If I delete the driver the machine installs a generic driver and runs even at 1920x1200 (the native resolution). I have tried rev2,3 and 4 drivers. the machine came with a disk containing the rev2. For now it runs except it won't run a screen saver. I will test tomorrow if it supports a second display. Nvidia Fx3800M. It worked fine until a month ago. Reinstall W7, works until video driver installed. Can't seem to find a driver that works. Maybe there is a hardware problem.
