U seems to say alot of things, but no mention of an actual problem.
It would be easier to comprehend your post if u use puntuations.

Consider yourself lucky to have a silent laptop ... If you want to check
whether this fan works or not, you must run a CPU intensive program.
Watching a DVD on your machine (which I do not know specifically, just
assuming it has a DVD drive!) is one way to do this.

The fan only runs when the laptop gets hot, and on this laptop, it
rarely runs. There is a DOS fan test program that will manually turn
the fan on and off for testing.

No, not on some (& older) laptops
o Some laptops run the fan all the time at a low level
---- example -- P4/Celeron 2.4Ghz Inspiron 1100
---- reason -- the chips have high *idle* thermal dissipation
o Some laptops only run the fan when they get hot
---- example -- P2 laptops, low clockspeed P3 laptops
---- reason -- those chips have low *idle* thermal dissipation
You need to find a utility to turn the fan on/off:
o Sometimes the factory provides it on a diagnostic diskette
o Otherwise it may be available via Google & other search engines

For this purpose the 400 and 430 are identical. I happen to know this
machine very well (serviced many of them), the fan runs only when hot
and it VERY rarely gets hot enough to turn on. The fan.exe program
should be used to test it.
