Folks,

Someone told me, they could network 2 PC's using just 2
wireless USB dongles and 'NO' router much like networking 2
PC's with a cross-over cable.

Is he having me on or is this possible?

Thanks
majora

You can make one machine into a wireless gateway that other machines could connect to. Though I have never done it or had the need to do it I do know it is very possible.

USB Dongles? Perhaps your talking about USB Wireless client cards/devices. Anyway, if so, then yeah sure. Run the cards in Ad Hoc. I don't remember you mentioning internet connectivity and you certainly don't need the internet to have a LAN (network) but if you do want internet as part of the equation then one workstation would have to be the host and running all the time. You'd then use something like Windows ICS or third party Proxy/Nat solution to share out your internet connection. The short answer is sure.

Thanks Guys

It's good to know as I have a pair of machines which
are ripe for some AVP and Halflife co-op play. Even
though wireless routers are pretty cheap I can't foresee
getting another pc anytime soon, so a PC-PC connection
would suit fine.

In case your wondering here's the type of device I'm
talking about...

CNet Wireless-G USB Dongle 54 Mbps 802.11g, WPA

there's a 11b one @ £15 as well

Figured that's what you were talking about after thinking about it. That isn't a dongle in my mind but did find a definition on the MS site that would qualify this as a dongle. Should work fine. You might just want to check the specs and look for Ad Hoc functionality.
