Windows 7 Upgrade

My parents bought a HP laptop several months ago that came with Vista, and a free upgrade to Windows 7 when released. After eventually receiving the upgrade CD I was wondering if I can use it to upgrade my non HP desktop rather than the laptop. The desktop of course has a legally purchased XP OS on it. Here is the question.

Does anyone now if the upgrade CD from HP would look for HP bios before allowing the upgrade / install to proceed?

  1. If it came from HP with a HP label then it would have been purchased under HP's volume licence and would not be transferable to another computer.
In addition it is probably loaded with the HP laptop drivers and software and look at bios for the HP signature.
