Im having trouble concluding if my 4870x2 is still a heavy contender in the gpu market?
finding alot of 5850 and 5870 and what not, but no direct comparisons in relation to current cards

your ATI 4870 x2 will outperform the ATI 5870. no need to even think about the new generation of cards.

gsgoody,you meant its marginally faster than 5870,right ? :) 
But just as ct1615 said,4870X2 is faster than 5870.The only cards that are faster than 4870X2 are HD 5970/GTX 580.

Awesome, Thank you! I just lapped and ripped off the thermal pads last night, I hope to squeeze out a little OC

I guess I'm mainly limited by my q6700 then? even though I run it at 3.8ghz... I find ffxiv and cod blackops both can't run to near optimally without drag

Q6700 @ 3.8GHz is fine.
I'm not sure about FFXIV but I've seen lots of users reporting performance issues with COD blackops especially when CF is enabled.So try turning off CF and your gameplay may eventually get better.But i think a new patch/VGA driver will take care of this problem.
