is there a big difference between the I7 and P8400?

Yes there is a big difference. You need to more specific about the i7 to know how much better. Architecturally dual core i7 has Hyperthreading, faster clocks and more cache.

Im going on a whim and thinking youre talking about the i7 dual core 6## series. P8400 came out in 2008 and is a core 2 duo Penryn microarchitecture, 2 cores, 2 threads, rated at 25W, google for more info. The I7 came out in 2010 and is the Arrandale microarchitecture, has hyperthreading so 4 logical cores, turbo boost, 18-35W depending on which model. Etc, Etc, google for more info.

If your choosing between the 2 and they are same price, go with the I7. Actually Id consider neither for a laptop, there are much better choices than those, not to mention the rest of the hardware.
