it would depend on what onliine game you are talking about. the two cards in general are on par with one another but certain games lean more toward Nvidia or ATI. Your best bet would be to check for reviews of the cards for your specific benchmarks. For example, WoW tends to do better on nvidia then ATI. If you play Blizzard games a lot then leaning toward Nvidia makes sense. There are also games that favor ATI more.

FYI, I would upgrade your PSU before your monitor.

the GTX 460 seems to have the upper hand but the ATI 6850 can handle the game well also.

here is the GTX 460 vs the ATI 6870 in CoD 7, they are pretty much dead even in game

When it comes to pricing, the AMD Radeon HD 6870 video card can be purchased for $239.80 shipped and the GeForce GTX 460 1GB can be found for $187.85 shipped. These two cards are without a doubt the most popular choices right now for mainstream gamers that want to spend around $200 and want a solid gaming graphics card. You really can't go wrong with either of these cards if you are looking to upgrade to a new card for Call of Duty: Black Ops, but the NVIDIA GeForce GTX 460 1GB gives you the best performance for the dollar and does a fair job in 3D if you turn down the image quality a bit.

You jumped from the 6850 to the 6870 and about $75 up the cost ladder. For the COD games, there is no question that they favor Nvidia.

it was the only CoD 7 benchmark I could find that included a GTX 460 & 68xx card.

If you do have concrete plans to increase the resolution of your monitor, the 6850 pulls a little bit ahead at the extra high resolutions. The other consideration is in the variety of GTX460's available vs. the 6850. Both have custom versions, but the GTX460 really has a lot more variety, from the overclocker's dream, the MSI Hawk Talon Attack to the ultra quiet ECS Black and everything in between.
