Unlocking a CPU with disabled cores is a gamble. No single AM3 processor is guarantied to unlock. If you want a quad get a quad! (you already have one)
If you get a triple core it would be luck to get a lesser quad out of it than you already have!
A X2 Phenom II with luck will turn into X3 and even more luck X4!

I like your motherboard ... but don't expect a huge leap in performance moving away from the 840.

Catching the PhII 955BE at $130 has got really good potential, though. It has popped up with a $10 discount from time-to-time over the last month or so.

That should get you in the 4-core -- 4GHz-range with decent cooling, and should feel quite 'snappy' :D

The Phenom II X6 1100T is going to be the absolute most you can do with an AM3 socket...and they're rare and pricey now...if you could find a 1090T or something like a Phenom II X4 960 through 980 you'd be at about the most you could get for performance...
