Xion 500w OC'ing an i7 950

I'll cut to the chase. I want to OC my i7 950 to 3995MHz. It's currently at stock.

I'm worried about my old PSU destroying my new mobo/chip. I got a Xion 500W ages ago. It powered my old computer, and I'm hoping I won't need a new one.

I calculated wattage based on the following factors, and here's what I got:

Xion 500W from the stone age powering:

i7- 950 @ 3995 1.40V (I have no idea how much voltage I need. This is just a random amount)
XFX Radeon HD 4850
3 sticks DDR3 (SDRAM?) (3 sticks of 4 gigs)
Sabertooth x58
1 HDD
1 DVDRW/CDRW
1 80mm fan
5 120mm fans
I'll be putting in a Corsair H70 when it gets here in a few days...

I'm calculating about 475-480W total.


Can my PSU handle that? Is there a risk for a triple suicide? I'll play it safe if there is.

I know my PSU sucks, shush. I'm getting a new one when I can afford it, or if I'm forced to early. :p

    -Capacitor ageing
    -Low quality Xion unit, I read many negative reviews. Before now I've never heard of such a company
    -Risking other components
    -You need to calculate using the outervision extreme calculator how much power at 100% load and enter your voltage and frequency when overclocked is needed on the +12v rail(s). Don't forget capacitor ageing, this can be important.

    I used that calculator at 100% load for my calculation. You did not address my question.

    I will look into capacitor aging, thank you for that.
  3. So aging takes ~8W off this PSU. That leaves me with 492W, assuming it gets 100%.

    It probably doesn't.

    My question stands: What is the risk I take if I OC?

    Yes, and I doubt that all 492w can be on the +12v rail(s).

    I'll save the OC'ing for when I get a new PSU.
