Hi all

I'm looking to build a PC and I need some help to decide which processor I should buy.

The PC will be used for gaming, browsing, multitasking, and office work etc.

I'm getting a good deal at the moment so I need to choose between the two processors. Which processor would you guys recommend?

Intel Core i3 540 3.06GHz or AMD Athlon II X4 640 3GHz?

Thanks

The Intel core i3 is an all around better processor. The i3 will do well in most games, and the option to over clock is always there. Not saying that the AMD will not over clock, but it will not be as good. I personally think that Intel processors run cooler and last longer.

i3 will smoke athlon in gaming.Even games which uses 4 cores will run better on i3.

While in your link the 645 beats the 540 in over half of the benches. :pt1cable:

Right now Arrandale/Lynnfield is dead, over priced and incompatible, its like getting a Q9550 for $300. Either look for SB or get the Athlon II, at least with ASUS boards there is a glimmer of hope in AM3+ compatibility.

When Lynnfield gets cheap I might move to it....

I guess they both would be considered budget CPU's but for gaming I would have to say the I3.
