So I finally build my own custom computer. I just happened to have a motherboard laying around that is the old-ish socket AM2. Is the socket AM2 going to be good enough of a pair with an ATI radeon 4850? And is it fine for just gaming in general?
Depending on the CPU, it should be okay... AM2 CPU's weren't the best of the recent AMD's but should manage to power a ATI Radeon 4850 good enough for acceptable game play.
Well, the socket doesn't really make a difference, it's the CPU inside the socket. Please note that AM3 cpu's have backwards compatibility with the AM2 socket. In other words the AM2 socket will take AM2 AND AM3 cpu's. So that means you can use any AMD cpu, granted it's compatible with the motherboard. You'll have to do research specific to your motherboard. Because just because your motherboards supports AM3 sockets doesn't mean it will support all AM3 cpu's. Which may tempt you to get a new motherboard, instead of "an old laying around" one
Haha, well I'm upgrading from a Pentium 4. So either way it's a huge step forward. I haven't had very good luck finding out about my motherboard and if it's bios will accept newer processors.
