I've had bad experiences with CF cards that are 1GB and over, so I have
a few 512 MB & smaller cards for my camera. But, when I'm on trips
lasting more than a few days, I get close to running out of memory
cards. I was thinking of getting one of those photo storage devices
that are basically hard drives, but a while back I saw something in PC
World magazine. Belkin makes a little sleeve that allows you to
download pics directly to an iPod. I was going to get a 40GB Photo
iPod, but those things cost $500! I'm trying to get a free iPod from
Gratis Networks, a marketing that are giving away free iPods. I've got
info about it on my blog, http://freephotoipod2005.blogspot.com

Why not get a USB / Firewire external hard drive?

I have one, a 40Gb USB2 version. It takes power from the Laptop via
the USB cable.

For less that US$200 you can get a 40Gig X's drive, basic, cheap and does
the job. For a little more you can get 60-80-100Gig. I have a 40Gig version,
brilliant.

Recently I bought an Archos Gmini 220 for exactly thie same purpose.
I payed about $200 for that on ebay. I had to upgrade the firmware
though to prevent it from corrupting data when copying from CF card bu
this is a common problem and there is a fix. Now it works like a charm.
I have not regretted bying it.
The free iPod, free whatever stuff is either a pyramid scheme where you
have to find other people to sign up in order to get it, or you have to
subscribe to something, order a new credit card.
Don't do it!

Only problem with the Xs drive is that it takes about 15 minutes to
write a 1GB card to the disk and the inbuilt battery (which you can't
take out easily as you would have to open the entire unit with a
screwdriver) only lasts for one hour.

There is another device which can write a 1GB CF card to disk in 3
minutes, but I forgot the name.

I've given up on all these options and decided to buy a laptop. Big viewing
screen, lots of storage space, and the ability to burn CDs or DVDs.

Good shooting,

Travelling with a laptop is great if you're not portering you own baggage ie
driving of on a package tour. For those of us who still do a backpack for
travel, laptops are like an albatross - heavy and fragile. Great if you like
processing images on the move but why bother? Your vacation is about going
to new places and meeting new people, not being stuck in your hotel room
reviewing and editing today's batch of pictures... Unless you're doing this
for a living, of course.

Firewire. Faster than USB 2 *in practical terms*, and USB 2 is itself
way faster than USB 1.

No - I wasn't talking about the interface. It's an entirely new device
which incorporates a much faster card reader.

I'm travelling with a subnotebook _and_ an 80GB Xs drive (and also an
external DVD burner by the way). That way the Xs drive doubles as a
backup for the images in case the notebook HD should crash - which can
happen if you travel a lot. The DVD burner allows you to create a
further backup, as harddisks are fragile.
