Hello, I have got a used Dell Inspiron 1100 with Win XP Home SP1a and after a
few months of use the system crashed completely. I would like to install Win
2000 with SP4 on it. Let me know if that is possible - as the BIOS seems
proprietary to Dell and I was thinking that maybe they have made the system in a
way that the OS cannot be changed just 'repaired'

Also can I boot in safe mode with it (with the XP home PS1a)? If yes then how?

Thanks for your replies.

That'll work just fine. Check the Dell WWWebsite for Win2K drivers,
if they aren't there you'll need to find your own, but it's not rocket
science...

I'd imagine that it won't be a problem installing Win 2k on an Inspiron
1100. The laptop itself is old enough that I think that there should be
plenty of 2k drivers for it.

Actually I just checked the Dell website and there are 2k drivers for
all the essential systems i.e. audio, video, etc.

Thank you for your replies guys! In the end I repaired the win xp installation
with the original discs that came with the laptop. And so far everything is
going on well.

Cheers to all.
