Fastest cpu for a single threaded app

I have an old single threaded app and I want to put it on a fast cpu. What cpu would be the fastest for a single threaded app. It is only going to run on one cpu so Dual or Quad cores just don't help.

The business developed it for communication protocal. This is not off the shelf and is engrained into the business system software.

absolute fastest on one core would probably be a I7 2600k at 3.4ghz core stock
but WOW would that be overkill (4cores/8 threads being used for a single thread)

A high end I3 dual core would probably be your best bet if cost is a consideration

Guess I will have to setup a virtual server so I can allocate the othe cpus to some other programs
