CURRENT GPU AND POWER SUPPLY: Nvidia 8600GT, Dell 375W PS (will be upgrading as well)

OTHER RELEVANT SYSTEM SPECS: Dell XPS 420, Q6600 Quad Core 2.4Ghz, 3GB DDR2

PREFERRED WEBSITE(S) FOR PARTS: newegg.com COUNTRY OF ORIGIN: US

PARTS PREFERENCES: Have used Nvidia for everything in past, never owned ATI so unfamiliar with quality / reliability

OVERCLOCKING: No SLI OR CROSSFIRE: No

ADDITIONAL COMMENTS: Looking for a GOOD upgrade. Will also consider building a completely new system if system itself will just bottleneck a new video card.

1. No need to build a new system, your current system is still fast enough (it will be great if you can OC your quad core to at least 3.0GHz).
2. Yup, of course you MUST upgrade PSU, get a quality brand like COrsair, Antec, OCZ, Seasonic, SilverStone with 500W minimum.
3. For your budget, you can get GTX470 for just $260:

or GTX 465 SuperClocked for $250:

or if you want AMD card, HD6870 for $260:

all cards above are MUCH FASTER than 8600GT, your call, buddy... :)

Thanks for the reply... man what a tough choice! Ok, I'm torn between the 470 and the 6870... The prices are the same with the exception of a 10% off promo on the 470 that ends TODAY, so I gotta decide tonight! :ouch:

Will I even notice a performance difference in these two cards? All the reviews I am reading seem to say the price difference isnt worth the extra $ to get the 470, but they are the same price here!!

ok, thanks guys. I went ahead and got the 470 since it had the 10% off. Also picked up an Antec 650w PS. $307 total with shipping, should be here tomorrow. :)

Can't wait to see how it goes!

Okay, just make sure you have good airflow inside your case, watch the card temps...

The GTX 470 was a good choice mate - They run around the 70-90oc mark (depending on airflow) but don’t worry, these are ment to run this hot (105oc is the limit)

Enjoy

worst case scenario, will the card shutdown if it hits 105c? Or will it continue to run until it just burns itself up? I dont want to have to hover over the temps in fear of not catching it before it gets expensive!

I believe it shuts down/underclocks itself for this prevention of overheating?? Not 100% though..
