I had a question a little while ago about the new ATI cards and how they compared to the GTX 460 and the ATI 5850. I thought i had it settled with the GTX 460 or a 5850 (Depending on price on Black Friday). Now im reading about how the GTX 470 kills the 5850 but when i looked at a few benchmarks the 470 lost several times and when it won it was by a small margin. So i did some more digging and i found that Fermi does better with tesselation. Soooo

1.) Which is really better in general gaming performance?
2.) How much better is the 470 at Tesselation?
3.) How many games use tesselation well enough that a difference would be noticed? In the future?
4.) How close would the 470 have to be to the 5850 for it to be a good idea?
5.) (Edit) How do the 470's scale with SLI??

6.) How much do prices fall on Black Friday on Newegg?

Thanks Ahead!

Solution
1) The GTX470 is ~5-7% better in composite than the 5850 (a suite of benchmarks at various resolutions:

2) The GTX470 is much better at tesselation than the 5850. In fact, improved tesselation was one of the main "fixes" in the 6800 series. However, despite the improvements, the tesselation performance of the GTX470 remains considerably higher than even the next gen 6800 (look at the red bars):

3) Tesselation is the main feature of DirectX 11 with the most potential to enhance visuals and add more realism. Some current games that use it: Aliens vs. Predator, Metro 2033, Call of...

Some current games that use it: Aliens vs. Predator, Metro 2033, Call of Duty, Dirt 2. Basically, just about any upcoming DirectX 11 game (Crysis 2) will have it. Here is a good article on it:

4) The cheapest 5850 is $25 cheaper than the cheapest GTX470 on Newegg. The range in price for both models is considerable, so most are about the same price range.

5) The GTX470 will scale better in SLI than the 5850 in Crossfire:

6) Prices are so cheap now, but if there's no rush, it may be a good idea to hold off, if not:
