40Tb Media Server Performance issues

I have build a media Server with following specifications,
Gigabyte GA-H55-UD3h motherboard
Processor i5 680
Dell Perc 6i Raid Card
Chenbro Expander
20 * 2Tb Western Digital Caviar Green in Raid 6 configuration
I have set Intellipark to 300secs as discussed on some forums , After installing Server 2008 R2 I transferred 3.4Tb data on the raid setup and it took 3 days . (The maximum speed reached is 30Mbps).I have set the cache block size to 512mb . I believe the speed if extremely slow , I made sure the raid card was installed in the x16 pcie slot , I might be missing something , how can I increase the performance of this media server or is it bottle neck due to hardware itself.

  1. Maybe try a raid60 config. 20 drives in raid6 seems an awful lot, maybe your raid card can't handle it I'd say try a raid60 and see if it works better.

    How would Raid 60 increase performance , and is there any limitation on number of drives in Raid 6 ? I thought Raid 6 is meant for larger Raids.
  3. There's a lot of proccesing involved when having 20 drives in a raid6. A raid60 would only have half the drives in each raid6 which should be simpler.

    And a raid60 is in theory twice as fast(in long reads and writes this should be in practice aswell) as a raid6(a fully functional full speed raid6 that is) because it's a raid6 and raid0 combined.

    And yes raid6 is designed for a lot of drives but 20 really is a hell of a lot.

The media server would entertain files as big as 250gb to 500gb , now breaking the raid into smaller chunk would fail the purpose, but I am understanding the need for Raid 60 , but here I am confused with different variables like Cache sTripe Size/Block Size and Cluster Size , I am sure there is a relationship , for example , Bigger cache Stripe = Faster Raid ,
    I will test Raid 60 on other machine in same configuration as see if there is significant difference in performance.
  5. a raid60 is a single partition if thats what you meant. And as for the stripe size well the difference in stripe size I think for large file transfers bigger stripe size is better and for better response small stripe size is better.

    Need advice if this is good enough ,
    Secondly Raid Allignment.. How to get it goinG?!
