Tri Channel (4GB X 3) and 1GB

My Gigabyte board (EX58UD3R) has been using a Tri channel set up (6GB Corsair XMS3). I needed some more ram so have ordered 12GB ram which supports Tri channel also. My question is, would a setup of the new ram (4GB X 3) work in Tri channel mode if I add the spare 2GB to make 14GB in total. Also would it reduce performance if it did work in Tri channel mode with the new stick or would it be fine.
