This June, mine will be 5 years old. That's right, FIVE years old!
No battery door issues (I keep a tripod shoe permanently attached to
the bottom in the hopes that it will keep the door closed if the
springs should happen to break).
I've probably taken 30,000 shots on the thing by now.
I've NEVER used the full 3.34 megapixels, and still make very good
8X10s out of my shots.
I'm praying that it never breaks, because no one makes the good
swiveling body anymore, except some cameras from Kyocera, and, horrors,
they don't have tripod mounts on the bottom.
Anyone else have some stories of joy to share about the 990?

Has it been that long? I bought the 950, 990, 995 and the 4500.
My granddaughter has the 950 and my grandson has the 995. I keep the
990 in case the 4500 fails me. Can't give up the swivel body.

Well, mine isn't as old as yours. Mine will be 5 in September this year, but
it is still going strong and still a great picture taker. I have only
made a little
over 13,000 pictures, but have no problems with it. I always take my shots
at the 3.34 MegaPixels format. Why don't you? Memory cards are cheap,
at least now. My first one was 160 meg and cost $350. I too love the swivel
and also the closeup ability and the quality of the pictures. I have
many 11x14
and bigger pictures made with it and printed on my Epson 1270 that people
marvel at. Since others have had their battery door to break, I am real
careful
when changing batteries and so far it's still fine.

Well, way back at the beginning, I had three 48 mg memory cards that
cost me $100 each, and the 16 that came with the camera. I was going
on a big vacation and had to set the resolution very carefully to keep
me from running out of room. Back then, there were no portable
solutions to offload the shots like today's Epson P-2000. I would even
set the shots at 2:3 aspect ratio because I could squeeze out a couple
extra from the card that way. I have since stopped doing that, but I
still shoot at less than 3 megapix out of habit. . . plus I am still
using the same 30 gig hard drive from 5 years ago and it's running out
of room....I back up onto CDs. One of these days I'll get a new PC
with a bigger hard drive.

Actually, a 995 and not exactly a story of joy; just competance. I've
had mine since this model came out, used it quite a bit, and never had
any trouble with it.
Sure, at some zoom settings the corners aren't too sharp, and the AF is
a little slow and fussy - but I knew all that when I signed on.
Oh, and you'd be AMAZED how much better my flash pictures are with an
SB-28 instead of the anemic built-in flash.

Love my 990.
Macro focus is a little sensitive and the zoom makes a noise.
Battery door fine so far.
Takes great pictures.
Had a look at a new 8400 as a replacement but just could not get excited.

Ours is still going strong, bought in Singapore in 2000, taken about 11000
pictures. It's been all over the world on travels with us, never a single
problem.

Me too!
Other than dropping it to get me a stuck pixel, have had zero problems.
Love it!
Only shot ~8,000 pix so far.
Love the twist body, love the macro.
I got some shots of a fly on a window glass, so close you can see the
hairs on its butt. Seriously!
Also got some shots of a squirrel's eyeball (it's in a flower box just
outside my window) in which you can see the whole building in which I'm
positioned. It's like a reverse... urmmmm.... fish-eye lens.
And, this:

You don't need the bracket but you will need the ASE-900 connecting
cable.

Mine is still going strong too. I now use a Canon 300D as my
main camera, but for many purposes I use the 990. It is in
many ways more rugged and is easier to carry when one just
wants an "insurance" camera around.

I still have my 950, even though it's been "replaced" by an Oly E-10,
Canon D60, and D10.
I still use it for quick web posting shots, such as photos of the
larger camera: http://webpages.charter.net/dwarner2/MonoBall.jpg
One replacement solution I've found for "obsolete" techno-items that I
like better than the new ones (Palm M515) is to buy a spare.
I just checked ebay for completed 990 auctions, and lots of them are
going for around $200.
