i have a laptop with the WEP key stored on it, but i dont know what the key is. i can see it in the connection properties; it shows up as dots (like asteriks)... anyone know how i can retrieve it?

If it is the wep key for your own network just look in the accesspoint's config. Otherwise I'm not sure how you would view it, there is a good chance it is encrypted anyway so you couldn't read it.

Check your AP's security config page as mentioned by folk. If your doing Ad Hoc and creating your own key's then you'll have to re-create it. If your trying to break someone else's key then your asking for advice in the wrong forum.
