Reading CF Cards with Win 3.1

Forum Digital Cameras : General Discussion Reading CF Cards with Win 3.1

I'd like to use a small Compaq subnotebook with its PCMCIA slot to
store/view digital images. (Nothing elaborate -- it's just small enough
to carry). I have a CompactFlash card reader that fits the PCMCIA slot.
But the old laptop runs only Win 3.1. Any ideas how to make this work?
Thanks.

hmmmm.... Does any software from the 3.1 era even understand the
image encodings of _this_ era? I thought .gif's and .bmp's were it.
Tho', my memory of that time is fuzzy, as I went m$-free and moved
on to OS/2 in 1991, and then also linux in 2002.

'Sides, some CF cards are now larger than the HD model supported
by Win 3.1 (DOS 6.0).

If you folks can help Dave with this, your next challenge will be to
help me do the same on my TRS-80 Model I - I can't wait to see my photos
displayed on that glorious 128 x 48 pixel x 1 bit display! I have
already expanded the RAM to a full 48 kilobytes, so that shouldn't be a
bottleneck... ;^)

The Internet started getting very big as a consumer thing about the time
of the 3.1 to 95 transition. AFAICT, browsers to the 4.x series (IE4 at
least) were made for 3.1. JPEG can therefore be expected as workable.
The RAW format of a given cam, probably not.

Only a few CF cards exceed the 2Gb limit of a FAT16 filesystem.

I'd lean towards a CF->IDE adaptor.

Seriously...Windows 3.1? Not only will you have problems getting the reader
to work you'll also have problems viewing the images them selves. Why even
put yourself through the trouble? At a technical standpoint you're looking
at a disaster.

Yes, and I am having a bit of a problem trying to get anti-lock brakes
and a stability control system to operate on my Model T Ford. Its a
hybrid, you know. Sometimes on hills, the wife gets out and helps
push while I gun the engine.

Sure. Just go to the card reader's website and download the Win 3.1
drivers for that card reader. Once you've got that, it'll be a piece of
cake.

Um... good luck with those drivers.

Yeah, and I want to do it with my old Kaypro II. Only problem will be
breaking those megapixel image files up to fit on those 180k single-side
floppy disks.

Every hear the old joke about the original mini-van?

Why did Chrysler build a 9 passenger (or however many it was, I forget)
mini-van with a 4 cylinder engine? So 8 could get out and push!!!

Download the pics on a friend's computer with a CD burner, get a CD drive for
your computer, you may need SCSI, down load from there. Did a lot of work on
Win 3.1 with Photoshop 3 and Aldus Photostyler. Those were the days of Syquest
drives, and equipped computers with 64mb of RAM that cost over $500.
