PCI express 4x

My motherboard has a PCI express 4x graphics slot, it's an Asrock 775 DUAL-VSTA.

I am using a vga graphic card but it's not good enough to play this new games. I want to buy a new one but most of them are PCI express 2.0 16x.

And that is my problem because i don't know if i can plug a PCI express 2.0 16x in a PCI express 4x.
Is that possible?

In this motherboard i can put this graphic card - http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=6680906&Sku=E145-0452

for example?

  1. You can use any PCI Express card on any version, 1.0, 2.0, x4, x8; it's globally compatible if the card is PCI-E and the slot is PCI-E . That doesn't matter but sticking that in an old PCI-E 1.0 slot at 4x is questionable because of the potential loss in performance.
I guess it really depends upon the card that you have in your system now. What is it?
