Forum Graphics & Displays : Graphics Cards 9800gt DOA - replcment needed older sys

Hello
My 9800GT card just died!

The newest game that I was running on my 9800gt was Battlefield 2 Bad Company 2.
I'm using an old Geforce 7600 GT at the moment.
I'm looking as a replacement, another 9800gt, GTX 460 or the GTS 450.

I think that I read somewhere that the GTX card had a "bottleneck issue" with older systems.
If so should I go with the GTS 450 or just perhaps another 9800GT? Suggestions anyone?

The systems I have now is:
AMD 64 x2 Dual Core Processor 6000+
GA-M55SLI-S4 Motherboard
4GB DDR2 800hz

Thank you all for all your help!

Don't bother with a GTX460, that's bit too powerful. You could grab a GTS450, but an HD5770 (which is around $5 cheaper) will perform better.

Upgrade to a Phenom II x4 940 first,
a GPU upgrade from something on par with a 9800GT will create a CPU bottleneck.

and you might wanna consider a AMD HD6850, based on the reviews i've seen so far, they're overclocking monsters and stock vs. stock performs better than the GTX460 in most games. :)

If you still want a 9800GT performer, u can grab a HD5670 which performs on par with it, while consuming far less power

As I'm running a pair 0f 8800GT's with an E8400 I reckon you should be just about OK with a GTX460 so long as you are at a resolution of 16 x 10 or higher.

If you were paying for it I'm sure the OP would jump at the chance.

As there is no chance of a BIOS update unless you know of someone running a Phenom x4 on that board I wouldn't advise chancing it. That's not the mobo in your OP though.

The Gigabyte board should be OK with the Phenom II x4's.

I have checked more that one CPU support list for the GA-M55SLI-S4 and in each case the CPU you suggested was NA or not supported. From what i have read though I'm leaning towards the GTS 450 if anything just because its quilter and takes less juice in most cases?

As for the HD6850..... I checked out the prices at Newegg and that's more than I want to spend. I need to keep it at 100 - 130.

I reckon you would be OK running a 460, I wouldn't bother getting another 9800 and the 450 should perform somewhere between a GTS250 and GTX260 192 core.

The 460 is actually not an option due to the price and like I originally mentioned I have read somewhere that there might be issues with the 460 and an older system like mine. What I listed above in the last letter where 3 GTS 450 and one 9800GT. From what I have read/remember correctly...

GT 240< 9800GT < GTS 450 < GTX 460
With the HD 5750 and HD 5770 falling on either side of the GTS 450.

But like I said with the GTS 450 you have Less power, Directx 11, and a quieter fan in most cases. With the 9800GT, HD 5750 and HD 5770 can be noisy depending on the manufacture. Also, I have been an avid user of NVIDIA for yours and I really don't like the idea of moving back to ATI even though I used them years ago.

Any issues with the 460 and older systems would likely be the same with the 450 and here in the UK the price difference between the two is quite small really.

Here.... I really like New egg the prices for the 450 have been $114 - $130 with the possibility of a Mail in rebate of 10-20. While the GTX 460 have started at $150 and up although I did find a Asus ENGTX460 $150 base but with a $30 rebate.
