Okay, here's my situation. Yesterday my XFX 9800GT 512MB died and I've since been using my PNY 8400GS 256MB as a spare. I am looking to buy a new graphics card with a budget of around £70 (UK). I think I am going to either buy a new 9800GT or my first ATi card (looking at the XFX HD5770 1GB). It looks very good! I need one that will run BC2 with the highest FPS possible in that budget. These are my current specifications:

Biostar TA770E
AMD64 AthlonII 240 2.8GHz X2
2GB DDR2 800MHz
160GB SATA 3.5" 7200rpm
500W CiT PSU (+12V1 = 13A, +12V2 = 14A)

I need some input here.

1. What is better?
2. Can a 2.1 PCI-E card run on a 2.0 PCI-E slot optimally?
3. Do I have enough watts and amperes for the 5770 1GB

Thanks,
Nathan.

The HD5770 is much better than the 9800GT, PCI-E 2.1 will work on a 2.0 slot with no drawbacks, and the HD5770 uses a bit less than 100watts under load, you'll be just fine.

I would like to add that your GPU will probably be bottlenecked your CPU. The radeon hd5770 is a good card though.

Your PSU should be fine, as long as you wire it up correctly. Make sure your CPU and GPU are on different 12V rails, because if they are only rated for 13 and 14A, you won't be able to run both on one rail stably.

Bottleneck? What do you mean? How do I run it on a different rail and then wouldn't it only be getting 13/14 amperes?

1. How much is the HD6850 is pounds. If its ok for you get that.

2. Some PSU's do mention which wire belongs to which rail. Your PSU is a dual rail PSU, but i don't know which brand is CiT! mattimeo005 is just saying to connect them to different rails. That's all

He has an athlon ii, and a lower-end one at that. An HD6850 is overkill and unnecessary,.

He has one rail with 14a and one with 13a; either one will provide adequate support to his GPU if it draws under 100watts, hence HD5770.

Yes. But does CPU determine overkill or bottleneck? I thought CPU restrictions was meant as bottleneck.

anything on the system can cause a bottleneck. What they are stating is that your CPU wouldn't be able to keep up with 6850 or basically anything over a 5770 at a decent resolution. Dont get a extreme video card unless you plan to upgrade your system.
