I was looking at Newegg and they are going to have a shell shocker in a hour for 2x4gb DDR3 1600 ram (link below). What I'm trying to figure out is what benefit will I get by the upgrade and if it is worth it.
I don't know if I can justify this purchase, but I'm tempted because I think it is going to be pretty inexpensive and my CPU cooler is pretty big (Scythe SCMG-2100 Sleeve CPU Cooler) and I need to use low profile ram. I've been holding off on buying more ram as I mostly use the PC for gaming / media.
I currently am using 4gb 7-8-7 1.65 DDR3 1600 Ram (details below).
So I have a couple questions. Is there any overclocking benefit to using 1.5v ram (My i5 is a bit of a OC dud)? Will dropping to 9-9-9 timings slow my system down at all? Will I have any comparability problems with the Patriot ram and my Asus motherboard the P7P55D?
Biggest thing though, is upgrading to 8gb for a gaming PC worth it?
My full system specs are below:
i5 760 @ 3.6
ASUS P7P55D PRO LGA 1156 Intel P55 ATX Intel Motherboard
Scythe SCMG-2100 Sleeve CPU Cooler
CORSAIR XMS3 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800) Desktop Memory Model CMX4GX3M2A1600C7
ZOTAC AMP! ZT-50204-10M GeForce GTX 570
Antec TruePower New TP-550 550W
Western Digital Caviar Black WD6401AALS 640GB 7200 RPM SATA 3.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive
ASUS VH242H Black 23.6" 5ms HDMI Full 1080P Widescreen LCD
For 31 dollars its a steal.but Be careful, because these rams aren't XMP compatible so youre going to have to set the timings manually. Just so you know, you cant use your current corsair memory with this one (may cause system instability). Buy 2 kits for 60$, thats what I would do.
