Non-working disc drives

Hi. I have a 6-7 year-old HP desktop with 2 dvd/cd disc drives that are (suddenly) not working, i.e., no RW, no playback unable to burn a cd. Computer has Windows XP home ed.. Is this problem likely to be obsolete/corrupted drivers or bad hardware? I tried uninstall/reinstall and downloading updated drivers, nothing seems to work. Thanks.

If you have another drive you can swap out,
I'd try that first, depending on how often you used them, it maybe that 6-7 years has been a long life for them.
