What to upgrade first.

Ok so the game that taxes my computer the most is battlefield bad company 2, would it be advisable to upgrade the CPU or GPU first?

CPU:Core 2 Duo E8400@3.6GHz
GPU: 9600GSO (G92) 768mb

I play at 1600X900, I was planning on upgrading the gpu first to a 4850 or GTX 460.

If I upgrade the cpu first I would upgrade it to a Phenom II x6 or x4 (yes I know I need a new mb)

That OC'd E8400 is still decent at gaming. Your GPU is weak, that should be first. GPUs are more important to gaming as well.

Your CPU is fine. Your GPU is not very good at all. A GTX 460 1GB would suite you well. Your CPU should be fast enough to use all its capabilities.

Thanks for the advice guys, my friend was trying to talk me into the CPU but I had thought the oc'd E8400 was "good enough" at least for a little while longer.

You guys helped me make my decision and I ordered a XFX Radeon 5850.

Have the same card, actually black edition rev.1 (don't buy the black rev.2 it isn't as good) runs all my games at max 1920x1080, i5 750 @ stock

I was considering the black edition but so many people said that theirs failed within one day etc etc. that it scared me away from it!

I'm guessing it was the rev 2 that so many people had problems with, but how do you know which version newegg will send you?

I would get a 6870 his, its on sale right now on new egg. It has better performance than the gtx 460 1 gb.

The original black edition had the reference cooler just stock overclocked, the only reason I bought it was because it was the same price as all the other ones when it was on sale.
