Upgrade from 4G to 8GB or 16GB - Need Suggestions

My son just upgraded his AMD CPU from AMD Athlon II X340 with 1 core unlocked to an AMD Phenom II X4 970 Black Edition. He's into gaming and would like to spend his x-mas money to upgrade to 16GB. I'm thinking 8GB will work. He currently has 2x2GB modules. If he upgrades to 16GB we will have to replace with 2x4GB modules. If we upgrade to 16GB what would be good value recommendations for 2x4GB modules?


His current rig is
4GB memory
ASRock 870 EXTREME3 Mobo
Corsair CMPSU-650TX PSU
AMD HD 6850 GPU
Rosewill Challenger AXT Mid Tower Case

8gb is fine, I dont think 16gb is necessary as games won't use up that much memory.
