Anybody remember this thread from last year? Thuban, the worlds fastest desktop cpu coming soon from AMD ?? Might be interesting to see how all those hyperbole-infested claims actually turned out :D .

We just received the official prices from AMD:
Phenom II X6 Six Core 1090T Black Edition: 125(W), AM3 Socket, 9MB Cache, 3.2 GHz Freq @ 295 USD

Only the i7 980X can beat this cpu, and it cant be bought.

A snip at only $1140

$295 for Thuban or $1140 for Gulftown? :pt1cable:

http://www.anandtech.com/bench/Product/146?vs=109 - looks like the lowly i5-750 does indeed beat the Thuban in most of the single or low-threaded benchmarks. Which probably explains why AMD lowered the price considerably from the $295 above..

Over the coming months, AMD will replace their top range quads with sixes. Just like that. When Thuban is released there is no going back to quads or duo's and by years end you will be able to buy a $99 six core cpu (I doubt anybody remembers but I said this 3-4 months ago and nobody really believed it then. How do you feel about that now?)

http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.aspx?Submit=E... -- looks like the 1055T is still priced at $170, which is 70% over Jenny's "$99" price..

bulldozer will take back the crown

Possibly, but i doubt it. Bulldozer will be late again.

+1000 to Badtrip - he correctly saw the future once again :) ...

Fazers I think you missed that memo - MC has already put paid to Westmere and last I read Beckton had to use advanced power management to get down to 900w from 1kW.

MC is where the smart money is going this year, and this is why. :)

No Chad, what is going to happen is every single MC chip AMD makes will be sold. It's just a case of how many they can get out.

According to this report , AMD actually lost a third of their server marketshare after Magny Cours debuted. They are currently under 7%, down from ~12% a year ago - go figure..

Anyway, the point of this thread is to note how bogus a lot of speculation turns out when not supported by any facts. Sorta like all those Bulldozer threads that keep getting closed due to too few facts and too many flames...

hah, those threads get closed because the world agrees that fanboi-ism is ridiculous. I've never understood why people have to sit in a certain camp on computer products. Price/performance and achieving the results I'm after is the name of the game, not AMD/NVIDIA/INTEL.

Finish the story with the intel/nvidia/ati promises...you seem a little one-sided and troll friendly right now...

In before lockage ... :wahoo:

Don't encourage him

(and don't tell him repeating the same ol' lie about BD being late will not make it true)

LOL - the more things change, the more they stay the same as somebody famous once said..

Anyway while I admit to being quite the fanboy in the thread a year ago, that was in response to the rather outrageous claims for Thuban, Magny Cours, etc. IMO, posters should be held accountable for such bogus statements.

AMD learned from its mistakes, like the VP Randy Allen stating Barcelona would be up to 40% faster in a wide variety of workloads, than Intel's Core2 quads. You don't see them making such claims now - they let their products speak for themselves upon release. All they said about Bulldozer is that it would be 50% higher throughput with 33% more cores than Magny Cours.

So my point is, maybe all the fanboys on both sides should take a lesson from the companies they so dearly love and admire, or else run the risk of being publicly embarrassed when the facts emerge..

^ LOL - forgot about that one :p . Was that Jenny or JDJ who used to espouse that theory??

In the other thread I started about Intel's huge quarter, I linked to a Barron's (not Baron Matrix :p ) article where Intel pretty much admits their primary weapon now is their fabulous fab process, and that they will be speeding up both 22nm and 14nm. I expect to see Ivy Bridge late this year instead of Q1 next year. Since IB is mainly just a die shrink of Sandy Bridge, and IB is reportedly some 20% faster than SB, then that does seem to be the way to go.

Adding tons of cores only works when software is able to take advantage of it..

It is interesting to see how things have turned out like one might have planned a year later. This could be said to how everyone felt Nvidia won't make a come back after the initial FEMI release and how they didn't meet expectations. Look now how they have come back with their recent GTX 5xx series cards.

The other interesting thing with these threads are how they quickly become a fanboy war thread! They are very amuzing / interesting to read through but in the end, they are fanboy wars = Flame Wars! With that said, I'm going to go close this thread before we get 2+ pages of Flame Wars going on between AMD/Intel or AMD/Nvidia.
