Hello,

I would appreciate any comments on the below components suggestion.

- System will be used for Virtualization only.
- I will use VirtualBox as Virtual server SW.
- Im currently planning to use Ubuntu as OS.

I will use this machine at work where it will host at least 5 Solaris guests that shall be able to run at the same time. At least two of the guests will have Oracle installed. There will not be much load on the systems. It will be used for development, basic testing, installation test and similar tasks.

I would like to be able to assign 4-6GB for each guest. I would also like to have the possibility to expand with more memory later on to allow more guests to run in parallell.

At the moment Im considering three options.

Option 1

CPU
- 1 x XEON E5520
34000 JPY = 400 USD

Mainboard
- 1 x Asus Z8NR D12
39000 JPY = 460 USD

Memory DDR3 1066 ECC Registered
- 3 x TRANSCEND 8GB (24GB)
15000 JPY = 180 USD * 3 = 540 USD

Operating System HDD in RAID1
- 2 x 250GB
5000 JPY = 55 USD * 2 = 110 USD

Virtual Server HDD in RAID10
- 4 x 500GB
5000 JPY = 55 USD * 2 = 110 USD

Total: 1620 USD

Option 2

CPU
- 2 x XEON E5520
34000 JPY = 400 USD x 2 = 800 USD

Mainboard
- 1 x Intel 5520SC
45000 JPY = 530 USD

Memory DDR3 1066 ECC Registered
- 4 x TRANSCEND 8GB (32GB)
15000 JPY = 180 USD * 4 = 720 USD

Operating System HDD in RAID1
- 2 x 250GB
5000 JPY = 55 USD * 2 = 110 USD

Virtual Server HDD in RAID10
- 4 x 500GB
5000 JPY = 55 USD * 2 = 220 USD

Total: 2380 USD

Option 3
Purchase a preconfigured system from e.g. HP, Fujitsu or so.
HP Proliant
Fujitsu Primergy
The main reason for me to build my own system would be if it can be done at a considerable lower cost. I have been looking for prices online for the two above systems and cant really find what they would cost at the end with the configuration that I want to have.

Thank you!

Best regards
Daniel
