Processor always running at 100%

Fresh install of XP pro on a partitioned hd. Second partition has all data from previous install. Processor running at 100% after install. Is the only answer to back up all data, blow out 2nd partition and install again?

Use task manager to determine what process uses CPU the most (ctrl+alt+delete).

It is a P4 1.8 ghz Reinstalled due to same processor issue. thought it was a spyware/virus issue. AVG and spybot didn't detect anything on previous install, but had conime.exe which I was unable to get rid of. Could the issue be something residing on 2nd partiton and afftecting OS or a hardware issue.

Looks like you have an under powered CPU. May I recommend the P4 3.0 GHz?

It's a computer for my 3 year old son, not looking to upgrade. 1.8 P4 should not be running 100% with no programs running

Where are you getting the reading that is is at 100%? In task manager what is using it? Full words don't abbreviate what the task is called, or even better provide a screenshot.

joecat70 i recommend superantispyware scan, and avast scan, i prefer avast way over avg because avg all ways misses for me

that and i help people around town that have viruses, also you are running xp correct?

It was the program for the wireless usb card. Let windows manage wireless network and shutting down the program resolved the problem
