I'm talking about stock performance and single card.I thought 58xx 's were better in performance but on the latest threads 6870 is being compared with GTX470,and it seems like they are pretty much equal.
If my observations are true, how come 6870 be cheaper than 58xx's?

Thanks

It's a much leaner card to my knowledge, it costs less to produce, ATI are trying to remain competitive by making a good, but cheap, card.

The 6800 series is no longer the "highend" series of cards from ATI. The 5850 and 5870 were not replaced by the 6850 and 6870. The 6900 series will replace the 5800 series. The 6800 series are supposed to be mainstream cards and are priced as such. Sorta that 5770 and 5830 kinda replacement. ATI confused us once again.

The 6870 performs well in some benches and not as well in others compared to a 5870. It's hard to compare the two. The 6870 is a new gen card and will have the strengths of new tech, but won't have the raw horsepower of a highend card like the 5870. Even though it is one series back it will prevail in games that require just raw power even at lower clocks.

Basically performance is as follows:

HD 5770 < HD 5830 < HD 6850 < HD 5850 < HD 6870 < HD 5870

The purpose of the HD 68xx series is to replace the HD 57xx series, not the HD 58xx series. AMD/ATI have tweaked the way they are naming their cards as implied by jay2tall. This will cause temporary confusion in the market which happens once in a while. At least it is not as confusing and frustrating as when nVidia rebrand there video cards which seems to happen almost every 2 years.

Whilst not direct replacements performance wise the 68xx were meant to replace the 58xx as shown by the slides ati produced showing the 57xx continuing with the 58xx not.

However as far as performance as has been mentioned for fps it will be the 6950 and 70 that "replace" the 58xx as the top single gpu cards.

So the coming line up will be:

5770<6850<687-<6950<6970<6990

Thanks for the replies. The line ups really help.I'd also like to ask where Gtx 460 and 470 would stand in these line ups?

Hd5850,HD5870,HD6870
Gtx 460,Gtx 470
