Phenom II X4-840 @3.2GHz
or
Intel i5 2400 @3.1GHz ?

Is the intel i5 really worth the steep rise in price?

My aim is to improve gaming performance, my current CPU is a Pentium D 920 Processor @ 2.80Ghz.

Please let me know what you think i should buy :)
Thank you,
Graeme

The i5 runs rings around the X4 840. It is indeed the better CPU. You, know your 2 options tell me, you have 100-200$ of budget for the CPU? If you plan to do overclocking, get the Phenom II X4-955 BE. If you do not intend to OC. get the Intel i3 2100. Both will cost you around 135$. Really, right now, they give the best performance to $ ratio. GL!

For what it's worth, I have a machine with 840 and it runs just fine, for the price. The focus should be more on graphics quality and amount of RAM.
