honestly, id look at the recent system builder marathon for a good suggestion of pieces.
You prob. don't need a really expensive video card, nearly anything that can play HD video will do. I recently used the GeForce GTS 450 in a low-end build and was happy w/ it.
As for your monitor resolution, id go w/ 1920x1200. Its a little wider than 1080p, and seems to work for me.

You don't even need a discreet video card. The Intel® Graphics Technology built into the cpu is more than suffice for your usage. Even HD full screen playback. You hook up the monitor to the mobo's built-in video output.
