Good or bad time to x-fire 5870's

I wouldn't. You pay $300 more to get what, 40-60% more fps? 6000 series has much better scaling. What I would do is sell your current card for ~$200, put that towards the $300 you would have spent anyway on the second 5870. That would give you $500 for a new gpu and you could get a GTX 580 which would probably equal 2 radeon 5870's or wait until the 6970 comes out. I have no idea the performance of 6900's though.

A single GTX 580 would be about as fast as the crossfired 5870's but you can always add another later if it's still not enough (and when it's cheaper).
 
Up the ram, a friend of mine has 12GB in his i7 build and most of it gets used up while doing encoding. Beyond that I wish that I could afford such a rig. :eek: Still would wait a little longer for the second card unless you want to hurry up and land it now.
