How much will 6970 cost? I know that nobody can know for sure but I'm wondering if anyone has an educated guess based on past cards, etc. I'm building a new i7 -950, asus x58 sabertooth computer and I am unsure which card to get. Do I grab a 5870 which is on sale for $250 at newegg or wait for a 6970 in mid December, which is probably going to be expensive since its a new release.

More about : ati 6970

Depends how much money you willing to spend on the computer. I haven't been on newegg for a while but aren't the 950's around $300 now? If you live near a microcenter and need an extra $100 towards the GPU they have i7 930's for $200, and with a little OC'ing you wouldn't notice the difference between that and the 950.

EDIT: Just saw that they have the i7 950's for $200 now

Should I wait for the 6970 or pick up a 5870 for $232 now?

The 6970 is going to be at least 400. IMo, 450-500.
IF its faster than the gtx 580 it will be 500+.

I would buy a gtx 460 or what your considering the 5870. You have a dual gpu m/b so you can either sell this card, or get another if you want to upgrade.
What are you coming from gaming wise - hardware- might effect my opinion :)

Are you buying today ?

I'm running 460 cyclones in SLI, its awesome. With dual gpu , you have to pay attention that your system is utilizing its power. I'm a fan of Nvidia, I think they have a edge. The 5870 is also a awesome card though.
There is also a special on this 119.00 EMCZZNT45

I'm going to get my case today. It's onsale from $160 to $100. I may also get the 5870 since it is also on sale with a rebate for $232 if I decide to get that card. I'm not getting the cpu or mobo yet because I can't decide if I want to wait for sandy bridge.

Theres no way of knowing what price range it will be
Beating the 580, it could still easily be under 500$ and profitable, so ball park is all you can do at this point, with no definates

The HD5870 is better than the GTX460 so if you can afford one it's the better buy.

Not imo. Its debateable. One if the former flagship , the other a newer mid range. They both have their pro's.
There are many 'new' games where a non o/c gtx 460 is faster than a 5870
The 5870 is 240.00 also comes with a rebate. The 460 is 80 40 dollars cheaper.

In terms of performance it's not really debateable at all, the 5870 beats the GTX460 pretty much all of the time: http://www.anandtech.com/bench/Product/162?vs=180 Unless black Ops is using a lot of tesselation I'm not sure why the GTX460 does so well there.

How about Starcraft II ? Yes the 5870 is faster in raw power in dx9 titles, but not in many dx11 titles and newer games. http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/starcraft-ii-radeon...

Its the tess engine in Fermi, much better than ATIs solution, but the 6xxx series ends this
This close to launch, I would not leave out a potential 6950/70
The 6950 could out perform the 580, and cost much less as well
Also, look for the 570 in December as well

The HD5870 is better in other DX11 games like Bad company 2, Battleforge, S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Call of Pripyat and Dirt 2. Overall taking into consideration lots of games it performs better than the GTX460. Here's a side by side comparison of the two cards in variety of games:

The HD5870 is the clear winner.
(comparison from http://www.tomshardware.com/charts/2010-gaming-graphics... )

Your showing me some #'s , and I'm showing you other numbers that show the gtx 460 in a better light, and its cheaper. It does phsyx and tesselation better , so I know its the better card/value. So its the clear winner in your mind only.

The 5870 is a great card, especially with price cuts.
But there is a reason why the 6870 was made.
It has higher tesselation performance, and thats just 1 area of 'some' games.
It and other factors are what a buyer has to weigh with price on whats the best.
