I have a 20+4 pin power connector on my current PSU, could use that to power a motherboard with a 24 pin power connector?

Depending on the colours of the 4Pin. If its black and yellow, it wont fit. If it has orange in it, and it fits, then yes, it will.

The gemeral meaning of 20+4 is that the last 4 pins clip onto the 20 to make a 24. are there 4 pins on the large bundle that are next to the 20?

Actually older atx boards just used the 20pin the 20+4 pin(24pins) is actually to give more power to the newer and modern power hungry boards.the 20 pins are in fact used so that it would be compatible with older mobos.
