Any $25 dvd burner from newegg will work, just make sure it has a 4 or 5 egg rating.

Dont waste time with cd drives or dvd read only drives because sooner or later you want to make one and need the burner.

As for a network card (called nic's), your motherboard will probably have a decent working one built in. They come in different speeds. 10, 100, and 1000 (called gigabit). Basically you want to match the speed of the network where the computer will be. The higher speed ones can work at the lower speeds fine but the lower speed one will not work at the higher speed. You can find decent gigabit nic's for the same price as a 100 nic just make sure drivers are available for your operating system.

It will be pretty hard to find any decent current board w/o Gigabit ethernet on board. No need for a separate NIC.

As for the optical, what you get will depend on ya needs....

At the most basic, a DVD Writer will cost ya $20 or so:
Asus 24X DRW-24B3L w/ LS http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E168...

Next comes a Blue Ray Reder / DVD Writer which will allow you to watch BR Movies on ya puter, about $90

Plextor BR Combo Drive w/ LS http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E168...

Finally, a BR Writer will write to the very expensive BR media at about $120

newegg often has bluray stuff on sale in the $60 range.
you do NOT need bluray for games, tho, and there's no reason to get anything fancy. just make sure it's reviewed as reliable.

Were you considering wireless or wired. Like the previous responses said your M/B should have a decent wired nic which for gaming I would recommend sticking to. Wireless will never meet the speeds of wired plus there is a lot of resistance and interferance with wireless (walls and any other electromagnetic energy at the same wavelength). Just buy a really long network cord off the egg for aroung 17-20 if you have to.
