Transfer old documents and programmes from vista hdd to win 7 new pc

my pc broke the other day and would not boot it was 500Gb Sata HDD Medion HD 8828 the factory setting boot disc only would let me wipe the drive and loose 385gb of Data

So I cut my losses and bought a new WD 1TB HDD and took it to a deaaler to fit it and to update o/s to windows 7

He had many problem doing this but did load it Noe I need to copy old programmes to new HD How is this best done Programmes and DATA pasword documents etc

Data can just be copied; programs need to be re-installed under the new OS.
Microsoft does provide a migration tool that provides an awfully good chance of moving applications intact from the old install to the new.

Unfortunately, I think that you need to be able to boot the old OS for this to work.
