What is the best amd am3 cpu for unlocking its full potential

I have a number of CPU's ready to go in Motherboards. Most are AMD, but I have 1 Quad core Intel probably a 9600 or something like that. What are the trade off's [price mainly] to just zoom over to a 6 or 8 core AMD.
