So....i am planning on building my first desktop...mostly for gaming and the experience. My budget is between $500-1000. Im just not sure where to start with all the different components out there. My hardware skills are obviously lacking as i do mostly software related projects.

First off, i was considering on of the antec cases, maybe the two 200 or the 300.
But im not sure what brand or model of the components i should be looking for.

If someone could give me some advice, or point me somewhere that explains this stuff. I would be grateful.

Start with a motherboard and CPU, AMD or Intel. Base the rest of the system off of that. Asus and Gigabyte boards are very popular and reliable. Get yourself some ideas of what features and pricing you're looking for. Spend some time getting a basic idea of what you want/need and it will be easier for us to help you "tweak" your choices. As far as your budget, a decent gaming system can be easily built within that range.
