Small sensors, rear element of the lens closer to the sensor, lower consumer
expectations, etc.

it's easier to make a 5 or 7mm f:2.8 lens than a 17~85mm f:2.8

Smaller sensors on the P & S models means that
the lenses need to cover a smaller image circle.

For similar reasons, lenses for MF cost more
than comparable lenses for 35 mm, and lenses
for LF cost more still.

I mean... I have a 90 mm f/8 lens that I
paid $700 for. This would be ridiculous
for a lens for a 35 mm SLR body. But the
lens I'm describing is a wide-angle for
a 4x5 camera, with a very large image
circle (225 mm.)

My guess is that the cost of building a decent fast lens is the problem.
The point and shoot cameras can do it inexpensively because the lack in
quality won't be noticed quite as much and because of the smaller sensors
the lens is also smaller and less expensive. Used to be that a decent SLR
came with a very fast 50mm lens. Now you can't sell a camera unless it has
a zoom. Fast zooms are harder to make and more expensive. It will all get
worked out.

Look at the size of SLR lenses...that's a lot more glass than the small
digicams to make with a large aperture.
