I'm new to tom's hardware and am not completely computer savy so if I sound like I don't know what I'm talking about it's because I don't.

My question is, if most applications and games do not utilize more than 2 threads then, wouldn't a Hyperthreaded Duo Core be future proof? That is, it can use 4 threads, so when applications and games start use more the duo core will simply keep up. (and if a game says it requires a quad, that the HT Duo would provide enough threads to emulate the quad?)

The only thing I can think of that would explain why this wouldn't work is if the application or game required a specific base. (3.0Ghz per thread)

I'm asking this because I'm looking to buy a new laptop and want to get the most out of my money. I don't plan on serious gaming just a few RTS's. I may pickup BF3, if I do would the i7 2620M keep up or should I go with the i7 2820qm. I'd get but I really need a laptop for school so I am trying to find a middle ground.

Thanks!

BTW Sry for so many questions.
