Welcome to Tom's Forum! :)

Frankly, it's MUCH cheaper to purchase a NEW notebook. However, the best (2) things you can do to improve speed is: 1. SSD, 2. 2GB+ of RAM if possible.

Your HP Pavilion dv8000 is old and out of date, and unlike a Desktop it really isn't designed to be 'upgraded' aka it's disposable. The current ~$400 notebooks will run circles around your HP and --- really what's there to 'upgrade' --- so sell it or better wipe-off the data once transferred and IMO donate it.

what issues are you having? I agree.. upgrading RAM should help with performance. are you using winXP or win7. win7 is great for netbooks and laptops with low ram. If you're just using it for internet and office, wipe it and install win7 and upgrade RAM... keep using it until it dies completly...
