Hello,I am currently having weird temperature readings with q9300. I have an Asus motherborad, with the motherboard i have a piece of software where i am able to change the clock speed while in windows, when CPU is in idle I have underclocked the cpu to 1.7ghz from 2.5ghz and i get these results when at 1.7ghz

CPU: 22C
CPU#1/CORE#1: 49C
CPU#1/CORE#2: 50C
CPU#1/CORE#3: 48C
CPU#1/CORE#4: 51C

So arent i supposed to get lower temps??????

specs
Intel core2quad 9300 @ 2.5ghz
Motherboard p5qc
DDR3 1333mhz
ATI HDD 4870
Windows 7

Hello, and welcome to THG.

What is your voltage. The processor may be slower, but that does not mean it will run cooler. More electrons are passing through at a slower rate, so more thermal buildup.

Thnx for the reply,

I checked the voltage on my motherboard, its at default but when checked with everest its at 1.25V

Also the q9300 that i have is the 45nm

So dogman do u think i should not underclock my cpu when idle?? the reason why i did it is to increase life expectancy of cpu. (By the way if anyone is wondering the cpu does go to its normal state of 2.5ghz when used).

I think you should not underclock a cpu to increase life expectancy.. You could underclock to decrease power usage.. Only heavy overclocking will decrease lifetime, so i think you should not be worried. However i dont know about underclocking.. How many decades are you planning to keep that CPU? With these temps at normal speed you should check your cooling or thermal paste. Cuz these are not good temps.
I have Q9550 @ 3.4Ghz when idle
CPU#1/CORE#1: 42C
CPU#1/CORE#2: 38C
CPU#1/CORE#3: 37C
CPU#1/CORE#4: 37C
cheers

With an after market cooler, not a really good one, but doing its job just fine looking at the temps. But the way how thermal paste is applied matters a lot!

The airflow in case is alright, i have nzxt tempest case, also i have an aftermarket cooler, coolmaster hyper 101( http://www.coolermaster.com/product.php?product_id=6631&category_id=3565). what ill do is when i get back home from uni ill reset the cpu to 2.5ghz and see what i get. the thing is that when playing intense games i get max of 52 - 55 c so it not to high but i get really high temps for idle.

Sir sawo, when u said that how thermal pastes means a lot how did u put ur paste, becasue i have looking on the internet for advice and there is some many ways for example some people say for quad core you should draw a small line of paste and others say do a small bob so what technique did you use when you pasted the cpu???
