Please forgive my lack of knowledge on these subjects.
I have a 6 year old computer that is now running into memory problems with some games and graphics software. Origionally bought the comp with 2 gigs of memory (expecting to add more at some point) with these specs:
Memory Module 1
Capacity: 1024MB
Bank Label: DIMM #1
Mem_Type: DDR-SDRAM
Mem_Bandwidth: PC3200 (200 MHz)
MEM-DDR1GBPC32AW83
Memory Module 2
Capacity: 1024MB
Bank Label: DIMM #2
Mem_Type: DDR-SDRAM
Mem_Bandwidth: PC3200 (200 MHz)
MEM-DDR1GBPC32AW83
I'm having trouble finding memory available for sale with these exact specs to fill the 3rd and 4th memory slots on my mobo so I thought perhaps all new memory would be prudent.
My motherboard is an A8N32-SLI-Deluxe with:
4 184-pin DIMM sockets
Maximum of 4GB of DDR266/333/400 SDRAM
DRAM: 100, 133, 166, 183, 200, 216, 233, 250MHz
voltage: DDR: auto, 2.50-4.00V in 0.05V increments
(if I'm reading these specs correctly)
For the new memory I think I've settled on ordering 4:
PNY Optima 1GB 184-Pin DDR SDRAM DDR 400 (PC 3200) Desktop Memory Model MD1024SD1-400
from Newegg.
My questions are:
1) Am I selecting the correct type of memory for my motherboard as far as functionality?
2) Is there a better choice as far as optimal memory that my mobo can handle?
3) Am I correct that simply pulling out the 2 old sticks and inserting the 4 new ones is all I will need to do or is there more to it, like worrying about voltages or other fiddlings with the motherboard? I've replaced graphics cards before but never memory. If there's more to it, can you point me to a reliable guide on installing memory?
4) Would I get the same results simply continuing my search for 2 more equivelant memory modules to the ones I already have or are 4 all new modules a better choice performance wise?
5) is it true that windows XP (32bit) will only use a max of 3 gigs of memory? If this is the case, is going with 4 gigs pointless without upgrading to Windows 7? I currently have no plans to upgrade to windows 7 yet.
