I compared them on the asus site, and they are, feature for feature, identical.
It appears that the BF3 edition might come with some BF3 swag, but the boards themselves are identical.

The biggest difference is the 'OC Key' on the Extreme, improved/active Chipset cooling, 8XDIMM Slots, PCIe switches, BlueTooth, etc. The Extreme is worth the £60.

You are comparing the wrong boards. It's the Extreme against the extreme BF3 Edition, not Extreme against Formula.

Then you're wasting your money. Both the Extreme & Formula are designed for OC and 3-4 WAY CF/SLI. Otherwise look at the P9X79 PRO or P9X79 Deluxe - http://www.asus.com/Motherboards/Intel_Socket_2011/Intel_X79
