Realized my compatibility might not work.

I bought a SAPPHIRE TOXIC hd6850 from newegg the other day because I heard that it would work with my PCI-E 1.0 even though it is a PCI-E 2.0. I am now realizing that it says right on the box it is a 2.1 PCI-E card which has compatibility issues with my slot. I do not know who to trust, newegg saying that it is 2.0, or SAPPHIRE saying it is a 2.1. If this doesn't work out :( will a MSI GTX 460 HAWK edition work and not hinder any performance even though I only have a PCI-E 1.0 x16? (Basically a PCI-E 2.0 x8 slot)
