Will an upgrade from 2GB ram to 4GB improve speed

It will sure make your desktop experience much more smoother even with multiple programs open at the same instant.. Worth it IMO..

Ram is one of the better cheap upgrades. Adding 2gb will give you about 3.3gb, assuming you are on 32 bit XP.
It will lower your dependence on the hard drive for performance.

That said, I don't thnk I would spend much to upgrade your system. Save up for a modern replacement.

As mentioned above, adding 2GB of RAM will only slightly improve performance a little bit.

Also, you will only actually get an additional 1.3GB of RAM for Windows XP to use. You actually need a 64-bit operating system to access the entire 4GB of RAM instead of 3.3GB.

I went from 2gb DDR2-533 to 4gb DDR2-800 and it made things smoother
but I like to use a Virtual Machine for browsing so it helped having extra memory for that
but it wasnt a noticeable increase unless you open very many apps at one time

not even worth ordering the ram for witha pentium D inside, I agree with Geofelt, save that money for a new pc.
